Mesh Distance

Calculates the distance between two meshes, in both directions.

Main applications:
3D texture extraction for 5-axis laser engraving
Given a CAD representation of the final object to be obtained and the initial mold surface, this tool calculates the texture to be applied in the 5-axis laser texturing process.
Difference between original and processed meshes
Calculates the difference between two meshes and displays the results both in graphical and numerical form.
High Precision Mesh Decimation

Guarantees the maximum 3D distance between the original and reduced meshes.

Calculates reduced meshes that have exactly the same shape and quality as the original ones, within the specified tolerance values.
Mesh Healing and Optimization

Automatically repairs and optimizes polygonal meshes for laser texturing and 3D printing.

Repairs edge connections
Corrects small, bad form factor, folded and inverted triangles
Fills holes and creates watertight meshes

As the result of a consulting engagement by Agie Charmilles New Technologies, Netdiffusion devised a new process and developed a new Rhino plug-in that allow to use highly reliable laser engraving methods to substitute classical milling engraving machines.

3D laser texturing and 3D printing are relatively new technologies. At netDiffusion we work in cooperation with equipment manufacturers and end users to devise new applications.

Many times the adoption of subtractive and/or additive manufacturing technologies can simplify or streamline the process that was used with other technologies. We analyze such processes and propose reengineering actions to increase the process efficiency.

Hybrid subtractive manufacturing: milling and 3D laser engraving
Laser technology provides much more level of detail and precision than milling but it is not efficient for removal of large quantities of material. Netdiffusion, in collaboration with Agie Charmilles New Technologies, has developed an automated process which combines 5-axis milling and laser engraving to efficiently obtain objects with a very high level of detail.

Mapping Services for Laser Texturing

The mapping process, applying a 2D image –which represents a texture- to a 3D object, is a key step in the process of laser texturing.

We offer the best practices in all the steps of the mapping process:

Data import
We can import data in native formats (Catia, Solidworks, etc.) thus avoiding the geometry errors generated by neutral formats as IGES or Step.
Mesh generation
We apply healing and repairing processes to the meshes to obtain the best inputs for the laser machines.
Mapping
The mapping requirements are usually very demanding and this process has both technical and artistic components. We provide a balance between these components with technically perfect and visually pleasant results.
5-Axis Reverse Mapping
This process is applied when the original mold and the final geometries are known but the texture to be engraved is unknown.
